welcome
hallo,
welcome to my little piece of blog.
make yourself comfy, put on a cuppa..
and enter the deep, dark, mystical world
of the design industry.. through the aspiring yet slightly blurry eyes of a student (who doesn't like wearing her glasses)

this blog
this blog was created on 15/04/08
it's purpose? to document the weird and wonderful
findings of one visual communication student...
on her travels through the great, vast and slightly
scary mass; that is the design industry. hopefully
this will also be a good source of information to
look back on in the future and may also continue as
a blog long after the project's deadline
(to which this is part of) passes..

Anna Steinburg Talk Mon 21st April 2008 //Notes:
used to work for the association of illustrations now just does talks etc.. freelance illustrator. What is the difference between illustration and fine art? it has a message, problem solving its the place that it appears - magazine and in print The way that the image is used that makes the illustration
what illustration does? where have you seen illustration? selling a product, promoting it, packaging, tshirts, book covers;etc, logos(design), stamps, advertising(billboards, ads in newspapers, bus stops, trains, tv) editorial illustration
steriotyped jobs what are the processes etc.. always important to check dimensions of illustration(eg editorial may change)
how a typical job goes:
client calls/emails> get name & number, say you will get back to them (in that time, look up on web, call friends, research how long/much work it is) etc negotiate> client sends brief/text> write confirming job> have some stationaries ready- invoice/record of job/what they have permission to use it for think/research/do roughs> UP TO HERE HAPPENS WITHIN A FEW HOURS.(eccept childrens book) start immediately incase changes need to be made. send roughs to client> client suggests changes> client gives go ahead> do artwork> send artwork> send invoice>LONG PERIOD a month, maybe up to 3months (do days) get paid> promote self using samples from job.
For Guardian: she would get brief on friday, drafts to them on monday, finals on tuesday. Do they always like your work: its unpredictable, can go both ways.
you need to look after the industry, don't under-cut each other, ask for more pay through negotiations.
If work doesnt get published, they still pay you. I job gets rejected halfway through 50% pay
Qualities needed? Organization throughout - files, mac, stationaries People skills, social/nice person - pleasure to work with Be creatives - doing roughs/ promoting yourself Have your own style -be flexible but stick to your guns Be assertive -
Copywrite. Drawing of a dog, who owns it? the artist. irrispective of of quality doodle. he gives her permission to print in a magazine, she wants to put it on the cover. Important to retain the rights. Keep records because if you see your work else where you can refur back to records to check what you agreed
Typical day if you don't have a commission? Who will commission you for a magazine? Arts directors/Designers/Art buyer If you email them, keep a list of who you have contacted and when What would you send? Work in context/link to website/email/association of illustration (images, premotion book) site/postcard/posters 'this is a sample of my illustration' - and contact details on EVERYTHING
Life style?
